No Regrets

Eleanor Roosevelt achieved a lot in her life and was asked once how she was able to accomplish so much in her lifetime.

She responded by saying “I never waste time with regrets.”

How much time do we waste thinking about and living with things that have happened, either to us or because of our own actions?
Too much time?

A regret is a feeling of sadness, repentance, or disappointment over something that has happened or been done, especially a loss or missed opportunity.

Being able to overcome those things takes strength, courage and intentional repeated actions because, as much as we would like them not to, tough things are going to happen and we will mess up plenty on our own.

But that doesn’t have to be the end of the story.  Living in the moment requires learning from the past, but not living in it or with regrets of what we experienced or what we did or did not do.

We will be at our best, continue to become more and contribute more positively to those around us when we, like Eleanor Roosevelt, do not waste time with regrets.

Do your best to move on and be engaged in the moments in front of you today.

I’m cheering for you.

Be Better Today!

We are constantly in the process of becoming. Becoming more and becoming better.

Our greatest challenge is to not let ourselves believe that we have “arrived” after we win the big game or are at the top of the podium.

Yes, there is time to celebrate the victories and we may exhale a little bit, but our biggest challenge is setting our sites on another goal and then getting back to work to be better and become more.

Our greatest competitor is not standing beside us or across from us.  Our greatest competitor is looking at us in the mirror every day when we get up.

We also answer to that same person in the mirror at the end of the day.

At the end of today what will your answer be to the question “are you better now than you were at the start of the day?”

Only you will be able to answer that question.

Be Better Today and Become More.

I’m cheering for you.

Be A Good Rider

Last spring, we spent Spring Break in Arizona.  One of the day trips we took was to the Grand Canyon and my brother-in-law drove.  I normally do all the driving, enjoy driving and like being in control in that situation.  That day, I was a rider.  It was difficult but here are three lessons I took away from the experience.

1.  RELAX – Sometimes we’re not going to be in control of a project or situation.  The adage “Control What You Can Control” applies to every situation.  Every single situation.  I wasn’t going to change the fact that I was not driving.  I decided to relax and enjoy the ride.

2.  DON’T MICROMANAGE – Nobody likes backseat drivers or riders seat drivers.    Letting people do what they are supposed to do is difficult sometimes, but we need to let it happen.  It may not be how we would do it, but we need to accept that.  We also may find there is a better or different way to get to where we are going that is different than what we had even thought about.

3.  ENJOY THE OPPORTUNITY – Not driving allowed me to sit back and enjoy the beauty of the drive (ride), think in a different way (in a different seat) and not be so locked into the responsibility of driving.  So, you’re not driving or in charge.  Enjoy a different role and find ways to make it useful for you and everyone involved.

You may not always have to or be able to drive or be in charge.  Find ways to be a good right hand man or woman and contribute to the experience.  You may find it to be quite enjoyable too.

Be a good rider.

I’m cheering for you.

The Valley

Have you ever stood on a mountaintop and admired the beauty of the view.  You likely did not just land at the top of the mountain and may have gone through a valley to get there.

The valley is a necessary part of the climb to the mountaintop.  You don’t have to stay in the valley but will very likely have to go through one.  In fact YOU WILL go through the valley.

You may be going through a valley right now.
The valley isn’t fun but you can look back when you get to a mountaintop and know that the valley that you went through was necessary to get you to where you are now.

So much of your character that will sustain and guide you in your life is built in the valley.

You can’t get to the mountaintop unless you go through the valley so keep moving, your mountaintop is coming.

I’m cheering for you.

Do You Believe?

Do you really believe? Do you really believe that your dreams can become reality?

There is plenty of talk about “pursuing your dreams”, “staying the course” and “not giving up.” It is valid to talk about but in the end it comes down to this. Do you really believe?

There will tests, there will be setbacks and there will be doubters lined up to tell you why your dreams won’t work.

Your faith must be stronger than your fears. Your belief must be greater than your doubt. Your conviction must overcome any disbelief.

Pursue your dreams, stay the course and don’t give up and then believe with everything deep inside your soul.

Then, like yesterday, start to stack up personal wins on your way to what you dream of.  Moment by moment.  Day by day.

I’m cheering for you.
